Phonetically Driven Coda Maximization
نویسنده
چکیده
Building on the contemporary functional phonology, the present paper posits physical groundings in coda maximization. The four sorts of conditioning consonants that commonly undergo the syllabification stem from the articulations that preferentially affiliate to stressed syllable codas: contact of the tongue for the American English tap, no incompatibility for the British English glottal stop, less articulatory energy for voiceless stops and weak plosion for voiced stops, the latter two of which are categorized into a weakening choice different from consonant lenition. The commonly heterosyllabified examples of coda phonemes (e.g. /ln, lm/) lack a physical conditioning. The ongoing case in American English in which coda maximization has been avoided due to the nasalized tap (i.e. [] → ) is meant to be the shift typical to the variant, and not to be a flaw in the phonetic grounding. Conversely, two sonority-based accounts have flaws.

A Typology of Contour Tone Restrictions
This paper presents results of a survey of contour tones in 105 languages with lexical tone. Results indicate an implicational hierarchy of tone bearing ability, whereby long vowels are most likely to carry contour tones, followed by syllables containing a short vowel plus a sonorant coda, followed by syllables containing a short vowel plus an obstruent coda, followed by open syllables containi...
متن کاملWord - final onsets *
A word-final consonant is standardly assumed to occupy a syllable coda. An alternative is to treat it as the onset of a syllable containing a phonetically unexpressed nucleus. The final-onset analysis is shown to out-perform the final-coda analysis on a range of phonological phenomena, including syllable typology, stress, vowel length, and consonant phonotactics. A constraint-based implementati...
متن کاملExplaining Final Obstruent Voicing in Lezgian: Phonetics and History
In Lezgian, a Nakh-Daghestanian language, final and preconsonantal ejectives and voiceless unaspirated obstruents are voiced in certain monosyllabic nouns. This article offers acoustic evidence confirming that the two coda-voicing series are indeed voiced in final position. Based on comparative evidence, it is demonstrated that this phonetically aberrant neutralization pattern is the result of ...
متن کاملSyllable-onset acoustic properties associated with syllable-coda voicing
This study investigates durational and spectral variation in syllable-onset /l/s dependent on voicing in the coda. 1560 pairs of (C)lVC monosyllables differing in the voicing of the final stop were read by 4 British English speakers. Onset /l/ was longer before voiced than voiceless codas, and darker (for 3 speakers) as measured by F2 frequency and spectral centre of gravity. Differences due to...
